BEIJING, April 30 (Xinhuanet) -- Syrian media reports that Prime Minister Wael al-Halqi has escaped from a blast that targeted his convoy in the capital city of Damascus.
Al-Halqi appears to be totally unharmed, as he later appeared at an economic meeting with several members of the Syrian cabinet. A government official told the press that an improvised explosive device was placed under a car and was detonated as al-Halqi’s car drove by.
Reports said one of al-Halqi’s escorts is believed to have been killed in the attack, adding that damages were also caused to nearby buildings and cars.
This high-profile assassination attempt is the latest in a series of plots that have targeted Syrian officials and army officers. A blast last July killed the Syrian Defense Minister and deputy Defense Minister.
