BEIJING, April 19 (Xinhuanet) -- South American leaders have rallied behind Venezuelan President-elect Nicolas Maduro. They are set to make a collective show of support at a last-minute meeting of the regional group, UNASUR, in the Peruvian capital, Lima.
Most of the group’s leaders, including Brazilian President, Dilma Rousseff, will then head to Venezuela for Maduro’s swearing-in ceremony on Friday. The governments of Brazil, Peru, Ecuador, Colombia, Bolivia and Argentina, have already recognized Maduro’s victory.
But the United States and Maduro’s opponents have called for a recount of the disputed vote. Protests erupted in Venezuela after Maduro won the presidential election by a narrow margin on Sunday.
