Mandela responds well to treatment for lung infection
2013-03-29 (Xinhua)   2013-03-29 10:59:56

BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhuanet) -- The office of South African President Jacob Zuma has said that former leader Nelson Mandela is "responding positively" to treatment for the recurrence of a lung infection.

Mac Maharaj, Spokesman of S. Africa's Presidential Office, said, "Former President Nelson Mandela is responding positively to the treatment he’s receiving for a recurring lung infection. For the present, he remains under treatment and observation in hospital."

The Nobel laureate was admitted to a hospital in the South African capital, Pretoria, late on Wednesday. It’s the latest in a series of hospital visits since last year. Mandela has been in poor health for several years, particularly vulnerable to respiratory problems.

Earlier this month, Mandela spent a night in hospital for what authorities said was a scheduled medical test. In December, he spent three weeks in a hospital in Pretoria, where he was treated for a lung infection and had a procedure to remove gallstones.
