BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhuanet) -- Italy’s center-left leader Pier Luigi Bersani has said talks to form a new government have failed.
Bersani told reporters that some of the conditions set by other parties during nearly a week of talks were "unacceptable." After Italy’s inconclusive election result, Bersani’s coalition controled the lower house but not the Senate. He has been trying to forge a new government since last Friday. But the anti-establishment 5 Star Movement made clear that it wouldn’t back any party.
Bersani also ruled out an alliance with Silvio Berlusconi’s center-right forces. The country’s president, Giorgio Napolitano, will now hold a new round of talks with political parties on Friday. The talks will begin with Silvio Berlusconi’s People of Freedom party and end with Bersani’s Democratic party.
