Syrian opposition leader resigns
2013-03-25 (Xinhua)   2013-03-25 10:15:36

BEIJING, March 25 (Xinhuanet) -- The leader of the western-backed n opposition coalition has resigned, citing an insufficient lack of international support.

Moaz al-Khatib, who has led the Syrian National Coalition since November, said he was fulfilling a promise to quit if certain undefined red lines were crossed. But he did not specify what those red lines were. Khatib delivered a statement saying world powers had failed to help the rebels, and he could only improve the situation by working outside of the coalition.

Meanwhile, foreign ministers have been holding meetings ahead of the Arab League Summit in the Qatari capital Doha. They are discussing the possibility of granting the Syrian opposition a seat at the Arab League, particularly after the Syrian National Coalition elected a prime minister for an interim opposition government.

Last week, Ghassan Hitto was chosen to head the alternative administration, which is intended to govern rebel-held areas from inside Syria. The Arab League remains uncertain whether to grant the Syrian opposition a seat. But Qatar’s Foreign Minister has reiterated his support to the Syrian opposition and hopes they can send a delegate to attend the Arab League summit on Tuesday.
