BEIJING, March 14 (Xinhuanet) -- The UN has urged governments to unlock the funds needed to assist one million Syrian refugees.
The UN High Commissioner for Refugees, Antonio Guterres, issued the appeal while visiting Jordan, host to some 450-thousand refugees. He warned of an "enormous threat" to the region if emergency funds are not released.
He says with the normal aid budgets there is no way the UN will be able to manage the increasing humanitarian disaster. He also called for world powers to press for a solution to the war in Syria, or risk facing the conflict spilling over borders. His comments come a day after Syria said its army was ready to fight "for years", and world powers said they were drawing up a list of Syrian officials who the opposition can hold peace talks with.
