2013-03-08 (Xinhua)   2013-03-08 09:13:41

BEIJING, March 8 (Xinhuanet) -- The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights has released a video purporting to show six of 21 Filipino peacekeepers from a UN convoy, who were detained by a rebel group in the south of Syria.

In the video, a man who identifies himself as a captain in the UN Filipino battalion, says he and his men were safe, and had stopped in the village of Jamla because of bombing and artillery fire in the area.

The group of UN peacekeepers charged with monitoring the ceasefire between Israel and Syria on the Golan Heights, were captured by armed elements linked to the Syrian opposition on Wednesday.

The captors accused the UN forces of helping the government recapture al-Jamla town. They demanded Syrian troops withdraw from al-Jamla in return for the peacekeepers’ release.
