Bulgaria's Prime Minister resigns
2013-02-21 (Xinhua)   2013-02-21 09:28:49

BEIJING, Feb. 21 (Xinhuanet) – Bulgarian Prime Minister, Boyko Borissov, has announced his government’s resignation, following increasingly violent street protests.

Borissov told the Parliament on Wednesday that he would not participate in an interim government.

The resignation comes on the heel of 10 days of national protests, against the government’s austerity measures and high electricity and heating prices.

The prime minister fired Vice Premier and Finance Minister Simeon Djankov on Monday, and on Tuesday said that electricity prices would be cut by 8 percent. But protests continued, with 25 people arrested and 14 injured on Tuesday evening.

Borissov’s center-right party took power in July of 2009, and regular parliamentary elections were to be held in June.
