BEIJING, Jan. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- US President Barack Obama has begun his inauguration weekend by joining volunteers remodeling a local elementary school as part of the National Day of Service.

Obama was joined by First Lady Michelle Obama and their two daughters at the event. He delivered a brief set of remarks to the volunteers at the school, saying that they represent the spirit of America.

Vice President Joe Biden joined volunteers at the DC Armory, packing supply kits for members of the military overseas, along with veterans and injured service members.

Obama will officially be sworn in at the White House on Sunday in a private event with a small audience of media and family members. He will then repeat the procedure on Monday during a public ceremony at the US Capitol.
