Resistance to new decrees in Egypt
2012-11-24 (Xinhua)   2012-11-24 11:14:11

BEIJING, Nov. 24 (Xinhuanet) -- Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi’s has spoken to tens of thousands of supporters rallied before the Presidential palace. During his speech, Morsi affirmed he was not biased against any group.

But in Cairo’s Tahrir Square, thousands of protestors gathered to voice their discontent at the new decrees granting Morsi far-reaching powers.

Thousands of Muslim Brotherhood supporters have converged in Cairo to show their support for President Mohammed Morsi, a day after he granted himself sweeping new powers.

The decrees exempt him and other bodies from judicial review.

Morsi told thousands of supporters outside the presidential palace that his new powers were meant to stop what he called "weevils" from the former government of ousted President Hosni Mubarak... from stopping progress. He added he was also working for the rights of the opposition.

Morsi’s supporters have described the decrees as temporary measures through the transitional period to prevent supporters of Hosni Mubarak, including judicial officials, from blocking reform.

Atteya Shaaban, Morsi supporter, said, "We are here to show support to the revolutionary decisions Mohamed Morsi took on Thursday. And to tell him that we will always follow him in any decision he takes."

Thousands of Morsi’s supporters and opponents clashed in the streets, and tens of thousands of anti-Morsi protesters rallied in Tahrir Square.

Frustration had been growing for months with Morsi, Egypt’s first freely elected president who came to office in June.

Morsi’s opponents say the Muslim Brotherhood has been moving to monopolize power and that Morsi has done little to tackle mounting economic problems and continuing insecurity, much less carry out deeper reforms.
