UN envoy to Syria: Diplomatic attempts to end
2012-09-04 (Xinhua)   2012-09-04 11:04:20

BEIJING, Sept. 4 (Xinhuanet) -- ’s violence has escalated in recent weeks. Activist groups again reported a death toll rise on Monday. UN envoy to Syria, Lakhdar Brahimi said he was "scared of the weight of responsibility" on his shoulders.

More than 100 people were killed in Syria on Monday.

That’s according to the Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights and the Local Coordination Committees.

Activists reported that 18 bodies were found in the rubble of a house bombed by a Syrian warplane in the town of al-Bab and 13 more are missing.

Meanwhile, local residents said a Syrian military airplane bombed a building in Azaz.

Amateur videos online revealed damage suffered in other areas of Rastan, Deir el-Zour, and Aleppo.

On the same day, the new UN and mediator Lakhdar Brahimi said diplomatic attempts to end the Syrian conflict are "nearly impossible" and not enough is being done to end the fighting.

However, according to Syria’s Information Minister, Omran Zoabi, the situation in the country was under control.

He said, "Nobody should worry. Our situation in Syria is very good on the level of leadership, government, institutions and the army. Everything is under control and nothing will be different."

ICRC head Peter Mauer has arrived in Syria and is expected to hold talks with Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, discussing access of humanitarian aid to the country.

Hicham Hassan, ICRC Spokesperson, said, "Discussions will mainly be about the obstacles that we are facing today with the Syrian Arab Red Cross as well as how to perform our humanitarian services within the country, especially in the affected areas like Aleppo, and rural Damascus . "

The ICRC deploys 50 foreign and Syrian aid workers in Syria, but all have been confined to Damascus since late July due to the heavy fighting there.

The UN says about 1.2 million people have been displaced in Syria during the conflict and a further 230,000 refugees have fled to four neighbouring countries.

Refugees in Turkey on Monday spoke of the dire conditions in their country and called for international help.

Syrian refugee Jafar said, "Living conditions are really hard, there is no food, no medicine in Syria. What we want from the international community is to send food and medicine."

Turkey already hosts more than 80,000 Syrian refugees and the UN refugee agency says the figure could reach 200,000.

Hopes for a stable life seem slim as the year-long violence enters another month.
