BEIJING, Aug. 22 (Xinhuanet) -- n Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov has warned the West not to take unilateral action on . Speaking after meeting visiting Chinese State Councillor Dai Bingguo, Lavrov says Russia and China agree that violations of international law and the charter are not allowable.

Sergei Lavrov, Russian Foreign Minister said, "Within the framework of our foreign policy co-ordination, Russia and China have a very reliable criteria according to which we take all our steps. This criteria is the need to strictly adhere to the norms of international law and the principles contained in the UN Charter, and not to allow their violation. So we implement this criteria accordingly, and I think this is the only correct path in today’s conditions."

Russia and China have opposed military intervention in Syria throughout the 17-months of unrest against President Bashar al-Assad. They have vetoed two UN Security Council resolutions backed by the West that mainly blame the Assad regime for the Syrian crisis.

Lavrov was speaking one day after US President , in some of his strongest language yet, said US forces could move against President Assad if he deploys chemical weapons against rebels trying to overthrow him.
