Flamengo rally late to beat Chapecoense
2021-07-12

RIO DE JANEIRO -- Giorgian De Arrascaeta and Michael Oliveira scored two late goals as reigning champions Flamengo came from behind to beat Chapecoense 2-1 in Brazil's Serie A championship on Sunday.

Pedro Perotti gave the visitors the lead just after the hour mark with an easy tap-in after goalkeeper Diego Alves failed to grasp a Gabriel Busanello free-kick.

Flamengo equalized in the 78th minute through a long-range De Arrascaeta strike after Pedro Santos flicked on a Mauricio Isla cross from the right wing.

Michael, who replaced Rodrigo Muniz at halftime, then skipped past three defenders and rounded goalkeeper Joao Sovinski before stroking the ball into an empty net.

Flamengo, who sacked manager Rogerio Ceni on Saturday, are now eighth in the 20-team standings, 10 points behind leaders Palmeiras but with two games in hand. Chapecoense are 19th with just four points from 11 games.

In other Brazilian Serie A matches on Sunday, Cuiaba drew 2-2 at home to Ceara and Juventude were held to a 1-1 home draw by Atletico Goianiense.
