The Beipanjiang Bridge in Southwest China's Guizhou province received the Excellence Award of the International Federation of Consulting Engineers (FIDIC) during the FIDIC International Infrastructure Conference recently held in Mexico, according to the official website of the China National Association of Engineering Consultants on Sept 20.

It is another international award for the bridge, after it won the Gustav Lindenthal Medal in June 2018, which is known as the Nobel Prize in the international bridge industry.

Located on border of Guizhou and Yunnan provinces, the grand bridge soars 565.4 meters above the Beipanjiang Grand Valley, with a height equivalent to a 200-floor skyscraper. On Dec 29, 2016, the 1,341 meter-long bridge was opened to traffic.

As a section of an expressway linking Hangzhou in East China's Zhejiang province and Ruili in Guizhou's neighboring Yunnan province, the bridge boasts a largest span of 720 meters, the second-largest in the world.

The complicated geological conditions made it difficult to build the bridge but led to several technological advancements during construction, including four patents for invention and seven patents for utility model.

FIDIC is an international non-government organization dealing with consulting engineering, with a history of over 100 years. The selection of the FIDIC Centenary Award started in 2013 to honor engineering projects that greatly contribute to social and economic development.

A total of 12 engineering projects in China won the FIDIC Excellence Award among the 23 winners from this year.
