Chongqing police announced on Thursday that they will set up a special team to investigate a case involving a female driver and her policeman husband after video of her slapping a man in the street went viral.

"Chongqing Public Security Bureau is paying great attention to this case and asks Yubei district sub-bureau to set up a team to investigate Li and her husband Tong Xiaohua, chief of Shichuan town police station in Yubei district," said the statement published on Thursday.

"The team should handle the case according to the law and publish the results in a timely manner with a highly responsible attitude toward the facts, to the public, and to the parties concerned."

Around 8:50 am on July 30, the woman, surnamed Li, was driving a red Porsche coupe and tried to make a U-turn illegally at an intersection. But her car was blocked by a Chery SUV that was stopped in the crosswalk in a line of traffic.

When the SUV driver refused to make room for her, Li, wearing a white sun hat and pair of high-heel shoes, got out of her car and argued with him. During the quarrel, Li slapped the man in the face and then the man slapped her back.

The incident was filmed by passersby and the video went viral online. Soon, another video about her bragging about always speeding, running red lights and avoiding responsibility for traffic violations caused more heated online discussion about her background and police connections.

"She threatened me and called my car a 'beggar's car'," the SUV driver was quoted by Red Star News as saying.

"I am terrified and worried about the safety of my family."

On July 30, the local police fined Li 250 yuan ($36) and subtracted two driving record points for her traffic offense, including making a U-turn at a wrong place, wearing high-heel shoes and a big sun hat that could affect her vision.

According to Yubei local traffic police, Li had 29 traffic offenses in the past three years, including running red lights, parking infractions, disobeying traffic signs and using a mobile phone while driving. Major Chinese media outlets, such as People's Daily and Xinhua News Agency, have followed the news and published commentaries to criticize Li's behaviors and question her family background.
