BEIJING, May 24 (Xinhuanet) -- ’s main opposition group has met for key talks in Istanbul to debate whether to join a new US-n peace initiative to end a two-year-long civil war, while the Syrian government continues vows to crush the insurgency. After the meeting’s first day, a spokesman for the coalition spoke about the objectives of the meeting, and the Coalition’s enlargement.

"It’s very important for the Syrian coalition to be more connected to the ground so we’re looking for representatives from the ground whether revolutionary movements, political offices of the different FSA brigades so there is a discussion around that and I think that would help bringing those personalities from the inside that would help establish much stronger connexions between the syrian coalition and Syrians inside of Syria,” Kgaled Saleh, spokesman of Syrian National Coalition said.

Holding its seventh general assembly meeting since its creation last November, the National Coalition is expected to choose a new president, discuss incorporating new members and some other issues.

The three-day meeting comes as rebels face attacks by Syrian government forces and the Lebanese Shiite group Hezbollah in central Syria.

Since the Syrian conflict erupted in March 2011, more than 90,000 people have been killed.
