BEIJING, Nov. 20 (Xinhuanet) -- The EU has endorsed the newly formed n opposition coalition as a legitimate voice for Syria's people, in their monthly meeting on Monday.
But the bloc’s 27 foreign ministers stopped short of offering official diplomatic recognition. A diplomatic status can only be decided by each member country individually.
The backing from the EU gives confidence to Syrian opposition groups to prove credibility and gain the trust of splintered factions. The support comes at a difficult time, as a group of extremist Islamist factions rejected the new unity body.
The formation of the coalition last month aimed at uniting various opposition factions and seeking to topple President Bashar al-Assad's government.
