BEIJING, Aug. 11 (Xinhuanet) -- Six months after Whitney Houston’s death, fans honored what would have been her 49th birthday on August 9th.

Birthday messages from Houston’s celebrity friends, fans and her only child, daughter Bobbi Kristina, flooded Twitter. Singers Rihanna and Brandy and several others also marked Houston’s birthday.

Houston became a household name in the mid 1980’s when she was discovered by record executive Clive Davis as a teenager. From there she went on to sell over 170 million albums, singles and videos worldwide. Later in her career she went on to appear in several movies, including the yet to be released "Sparkle," which was her first role in 15 years.
