准确性比定量分析稍差的分析方法，特点是简单、迅速、费用低。常用于以下几种情况：①希望得知成分的大致含量，以便进一步选择合适的精确定量分析方法；②只要求分析快，不太追求成分的准确含量，例如某种合金型号的确定、工业生产中的中间控制、法医学中对毒物是否超过致死量的鉴定、试剂中杂质是否超过了法定标准的分析；③试样较少，没有理想的定量方法可采用。
