黄河流经玛曲大草原时，突然一个回湾，形成了秀美绝伦的“天下黄河九曲十八湾”之首曲景观。黄河在玛曲草原上流势平缓，支流众多。沿黄河两岸草地平坦，孕育了卓格尼玛滩、乔科滩、扎西滩以及被誉为花和鸟的“海洋”的西梅朵合滩等甘南有名的优质滩地草原。在黄河首区还散布着景色秀美的峡谷、森林、草原、湖泊、溶洞、温泉以及丰富的动植物资源。大草原玛曲被测定为“超洁净无污染地区”，黄河首曲所在地玛曲县还是整个黄河流域唯一一个以“黄河”命名的县城（注：玛曲，藏语即黄河）。钟灵毓秀的玛曲草原孕育了藏族牧民淳朴、开朗、热情的民风，至今仍然保留了古老的游牧部落的某些生产、生活方式以及民俗风情。在岁月的长河中，玛曲藏族牧民的热情好客之心丝毫未减，洁白的哈达、飘香的奶茶、手抓羊肉、闻之欲醉的青稞美酒、优美奔放的藏族歌舞都表达了草原人民对远方来客的一片深情。玛曲草原成为一处空气清新，回归大自然的理想避暑胜地。
