描述PhyteumaL.牧根草属，桔梗科，40种以上，分布于欧洲和亚洲，我国只有牧根草P.JaponicumMiq.1种，产东北。多年生、直立草本，茎常单生；基生叶具长柄，茎生叶互生，比较小；花排成头状花序或穗状花序；萼管与子房贴生，倒圆锥状，5深裂；花冠辐状，裂片5，狭长；雄蕊与花冠分离，花丝基部扩大，花药离生；子房下位，2－3室，有胚珠多数。花柱纤细，柱头2－3裂，裂片线形；蒴果于棱间开裂，有细小的种子。
