This paper introduced the concept,distribution and taxonomy of cold-adapted microorganism, study on cold-adapted principle and it degradation for pollutants in cold condition, then discussed the cold-adapted microorganism application in wastewater treatment that has certain theoretical meaning in environmental protection.

Cold-adapted microorganisms, which are widely distributed the in cold environments on our planet, including polar area, high alpine soil and water, deep sea, and glacier ice, not only provide rich materials for research on the low-temperature ecology system, genesis and evolution of life, and cold adaptation mechanism of organism, they also have a great potential in biotechnology.
