光子晶体光纤又被称为微结构光纤，近年来引起广泛关注，它的横截面上有较复杂的折射率分布，通常含有不同排列形式的气孔，这些气孔的尺度与光波波长大致在同一量级且贯穿器件的整个长度，光波可以被限制在光纤芯区传播。光子晶体光纤有很多奇特的性质。例如，可以在很宽的带宽范围内只支持一个模式传输；包层区气孔的排列方式能够极大地影响模式性质；排列不对称的气孔也可以产生很大的双折射效应，这为我们设计高性能的偏振器件提供了可能。
