道教教义。认为天地万物以及为人处世，都要顺乎"天理"而不能强求。《老子》中有多处提到"不争"。认为"天之道，利而不害；圣人之道,为而不争","天之道，不争而善胜"，"夫唯不争，故无尤"。道教承袭并衍化了不争的概念，使之成为道教戒律的一项内容。规定"容非忍性"，不论是非，"圣人不与俗人争，有争，避之高逝，俗人如何能与之共争乎"（《老子想尔注》），认为与人争会招致灭亡,不争不会遇害,能无往不胜。后世的道教内丹家又把不争和修炼联系起来，认为追求长生的人，不劳累精神，不追求禄位，不贪图财富，"不与俗争"。
