激素从分泌入血，经过代谢到消失（或消失生物活性）所经历的时间长短不同。为表示激素的更新速度，一般采用激素活性在血中消失一半的时间，称为半衰期，作为衡量指标。有的激素半衰期仅几秒；有的则可长达几天。半衰期必须与作用速度及作用持续时间相区别。激素作用的速度取决于它作用的方式；作用持续时间则取决于激素的分泌是否继续。激素的消失方式可以是被血液稀释、由组织摄取、代谢灭活后经肝与肾，随尿、粪排出体外。
