| 室韦 中国古代民族。又作失韦、失围。东胡后裔。5～10世纪主要活动在今嫩江、绰尔河、额尔古纳河、黑龙江流域。北魏时，室韦各部开始与中原王朝通贡。后臣服突厥。隋代分为五大部：南室韦、北室韦、钵室韦、深末室韦、大室韦。南室韦有粗放农耕和畜养；北室韦以渔猎为主，曾向隋朝贡。唐代，部落衍生，各部不断向唐朝贡，接受官封。中唐以后，文献中曾将室韦称作鞑靼 。840年，黠戛斯驱逐回鹘西迁，室韦-鞑靼人成批进入漠北，使这片原是操突厥语诸族游牧的地域逐渐蒙古化。8～9世纪，望建河（今额尔古纳河）畔有蒙兀室韦。“蒙兀”是蒙古一称在历史文献中的最早记载。契丹建辽后，室韦被征服。辽、金称室韦-鞑靼为阻卜。有学者认为室韦是蒙古族的先民。
