中心纲圆筛藻目圆筛藻科的1属。细胞单独生活,少数两两相连。细胞圆盒形。壳面平，或略有凹凸。壳面有六角形，多角形或圆形的孔纹，像个筛子，也像昆虫的复眼，有集光作用（见图）。孔纹的排列方式和大小是分种的根据。壳周在有的种类上有小刺，有的有小突起。壳环狭而无纹，或有环状纹。色素体小而多，紧靠在细胞壁，核常在中央。复大孢子只有一个。有性生殖，每细胞内有64～128个有鞭毛的配子。
本属约有 450种，中国有51种以上，如弓束圆筛藻。浮游于水中。多为海产,半咸水中亦有,淡水中较少。是草食性水生动物的主要食物之一。
