陇中高原(或称陇西高原)最高山峰。海拔3670米,走向北西,为榆中、临洮2县界山,黄河支流洮河和阿干河、宛川河间的分水岭。地层属前震旦系马衔山群,以各种混合岩为主。片麻岩及片岩次之,为秦祁地轴在陇西出露部分,故早有"陇西古陆"一名。马衔山属祁连山脉向东延伸的余脉,呈岛状山突出在陇西高原之上,上无黄土层而有高山草甸土与草甸植被。山地北坡有马衔山林场,还有兰州至兴隆山及榆中的柏油公路,并有至马衔山顶的简易公路。
