发生时间:西元前632年

就在晋文公即位的同一年,周襄王被其弟叔带勾结狄人赶跑,流落在外。晋文公抓住这个时机,约会诸侯用武力平定了叔带的叛乱,恢复了周襄王的地位,博得了“尊王”的美名。接著又用全力南向与楚争霸。

那时,一度附楚的宋国,首先摆脱楚的控制,依附了晋国。楚国为了保持在中原取得的优势地位,联合陈、蔡等国,出兵伐宋。晋国也在宋、齐、秦等国的声援下,於西元前632年,向楚的附庸曹、卫进攻,迫使楚军北上,於是发生了历史上有名的城濮之战。战斗以晋胜楚败而告结束。

城濮之战後,晋文公大会诸侯于践土(河南原阳西南),周襄王正式册封晋文公为霸主,从而成就了霸业。
