盐的离子和水电离出来的h+或oh-结合成弱电解质的反应。是中和反应的逆反应。由弱酸和强碱生成的盐如ch3coona，它在溶液中的ch3coo-能和水电离出来的h+结合成难电离的ch3cooh，溶液中［oh-］＞［h+］而显碱性；由强酸和弱碱生成的盐如nh4cl，发生水解后生成难电离的nh3·h2o，溶液中［h+］＞［oh-］而显酸性；由强酸和强碱生成的盐如nacl，它的离子不会和h+或oh-结成难电离的物质，故不发生水解，溶液显中性；由弱酸和弱碱生成的盐，水解情况较复杂。
