主要成分是碳酸钙，是由方解石组成的一种矿石，含有石英、白云石和粘土等杂质。因含有不同的杂质，颜色有灰白色、灰色、灰黑色、浅黄色，褐色或浅红色等，密度为2.2～2.9g/cm3。难溶于水。易溶于含二氧化碳的水中，生成可溶性的酸式碳酸钙。溶于盐酸放出二氧化碳。煅烧时生成生石灰和二氧化碳。用做建筑材料，烧制右灰，制造水泥、玻璃、纯碱和沉淀碳酸钙等。炼铁时用做熔剂。
