机体的免疫系统对入侵的各种病原体的防御功能，从宿主方说，可分为局部免疫和全身免疫，特异性免疫和非特异性免疫，细胞免疫和体液免疫等。对细菌、真菌和病毒等多种病原体来说，又可因其种类、数量、致病力、侵入途径等复杂因素而出现不同性质的感染。机体的免疫功能中有一种受到损伤或功能低下，便有可能出现感染或传染病。但在发病过程中，必须要有病原体才可能出现感染或传染的。而出现的病变及其表现主要决定于宿主的免疫力。一般而言，抗感染免疫对人体是有利的。但有些传染病的免疫应答又引起继发性疾病。如有些链球菌株可引起感染后的肾小球肾炎等。
