岩体内存在的层状或带状的软弱薄层。一般,软弱夹层的厚度比相邻岩层的小,力学强度和变形模量也较低,饱和抗压强度仅为干抗压强度的二分之一或更低。有些遇水崩解。按成因,软弱夹层可分为原生型和次生型两类。前者如以石英砂岩为主的岩层夹有粘土质岩层或泥岩薄层;后者为风化、溶滤作用或层间剪切及断层错动而形成的软弱夹层。在软硬相间的岩体内,往往由于岩层褶曲发生顺层错动,使软弱岩层的不同部位受破坏的程度不同而显示构造分带现象。一般可分为节理带和泥化层。泥化层又可进一步划分为劈理揉褶带、泥化带和错动泥化面。软弱夹层每一部分的结构、致密程度、天然含水量、孔隙度、塑性指数及力学强度等均有所不同。多年来,通过对长江葛洲坝水利枢纽和黄河小浪底水利枢纽的坝基和岸坡岩体内软弱夹层的微观结构及力学试验研究发现,泥化带内错动泥化面的抗剪指标最低,其原因是由于片状粘土矿物近似平行于错动泥岩面的定向排列所致。坝基岩体内如有软弱夹层,会影响坝基岩体的抗滑稳定性。河谷谷坡或道路边坡岩体内存在软弱夹层,往往会导致斜坡崩滑失稳。软弱夹层的厚度,层面的起伏差和粗糙度,对其力学性能影响较大。一般取流变起始强度作为软弱夹层的抗剪强度值。这个值相当于屈服强度,约为其峰值强度的80%。
