主要成分是碳酸钙,是由方解石组成的一种矿石,含有石英、白云石和粘土等杂质。因含有不同的杂质,颜色有灰白色、灰色、灰黑色、浅黄色,褐色或浅红色等,密度为2.2~2.9g/cm3。难溶于水。易溶于含二氧化碳的水中,生成可溶性的酸式碳酸钙。溶于盐酸放出二氧化碳。煅烧时生成生石灰和二氧化碳。用做建筑材料,烧制右灰,制造水泥、玻璃、纯碱和沉淀碳酸钙等。炼铁时用做熔剂。
