水电站多年平均的年发电量除以水电站装机容量的商数。度量单位为小时(h)。它是表示装机容量利用率的一项指标。 水电站装机容量年利用小时数，随着水库调节性能的大小，水电站在电力系统和综合利用中作用的不同而有较大的差异。凡在电力系统中担负基荷或腰荷的水电站，其利用小时数较高，凡担负峰荷的水电站，则利用小时数较低（图1、图2）。中国已建的大中型水电站，装机容量年利用小时数最高达7000h，最低仅1400h,多数在3000～5000h范围内。在初步选择水电站装机容量时，常用年利用小时数作初步估算,各类水电站合理的利用小时数,可参见有关的水利动能设计规程。在装机容量选定后，也可以利用这个指标，复核其正确合理性。在欧美等国家，常用装机容量利用系数表示装机容量的利用程度，其数值为装机容量年利用小时数和一年的总时数8760h的比值。
