又称“应激性”。生物体对刺激发生反应的能力。是生命的基本特征之一。如单细胞生物变形虫受到环境变化的刺激时出现变形运动；人体肌肉组织受到刺激，出现收缩等。衡量兴奋性的高低，是以能引起兴奋的最小刺激即刺激阈为依据。阈刺激愈小，表示兴奋性愈高；相反，阈刺激愈大，表示兴奋性愈低。
