工业生产指数用加权算术平均指数法编制的工化产品物量指数。它是反映工业生产总量增长速度的重要指标。目前，西方国家一般都编制工业生产指数。联合国统计司也根据各国提供的统计资料定期编制世界工业生产指数。西方国家编制工业生产指数，一般都采用修改的拉斯佩雷斯公式。其计算公式为:腼一黝 一一工业生产指数-艺瓮poqo艺P。叮。上式中，“1和仇分“”表示某一种产品的报告期和基期产量;景-k表示某一产品的报告期产量与基期产量相比的动态指数，即该种产品的个体产量指数;九q。一w表示以基期产品(或行业)的一L业增加值为权数。 工业生产指数，可以编制全部工业生产指数，也可以按矿业、制造业以及电力、煤气和自来水业分别编制生产指数，也可以按制造业内部的主要行业分别编制生产指数，还可以按中间产品和最终产品(最终产品又可分为用于投资和用于消费;用于消费又可分为耐用消费品和非耐用消费品)分别编制生产指数;可以编制刀度工业生产指数，也可以编制年度工业生产指数;可以编制不消除季节变动影响的实际生产量变动的初级生产指数，也可以编制消除季节变动影响以后的次级生产指数西方国家编制工业生产指数所选择的代表性产品不是很一致的。多数国家对于年度指数，选择的代表性产品要多一些，对于月度指数则要少一些。像美国的工业生产年度指数，选择的代表性产品有1400多种，而月度指数只有20。多种;但是日本的工业生产年度指数和月度指数所选择的代表性产品是一致的，1984年为534种。工业生产年度指数所选择的代表性产品其差异也较大，英国约840多种，原联邦德国约400多种，法国只有200多种。 由于生产的发展和价格的变动，编制工业生产指数的基期的使用年限不宜过长，一般最好每隔5年变动一次。在联合国《统计年鉴》中工业生产指数的基期，曾用过1948年、1953年、1958年、1963年、197。年、1975年等。每变动一次基期，有关年份的工业生产指数都要按新的基期年份进行调整，以保证各个时期统计资料的可比性。
