常见的有苍耳子、鸭胆子、常山、白果、篦麻子、马钱子、半夏、雷公藤、班螫、铅粉、铅丹、密陀僧、雄黄、砒霜、白降丹、轻粉、水银等。

《以身试百药当心肾衰竭》中提到红丹《红丹》此药为由水银、火硝、白矾、皂矾、雄黄、朱砂炼制而成的汞制剂。主要成分为氧化汞（HgO），及少量二硫化砷（As2S2）有毒，仅可外用，急性中毒者可见肾肿大、皮质增厚肾小管上皮肿大坏死。
