Trimethylsilylbromide-promoted synthesis of acyclic and cyclic acetals was realized in high yields from carbonyl compounds by reaction with alcohol, diol at room temperature in the presence of trimethyl orthoformate or triethyl orthoformate.

The cyclic acetal exhibiting ambergris-like structure is prepared starting from β-pinene,the intermediates synthesized based on β-pinene are myrcene, myracaldehyde, 1,1-dimethyl-6(7)-methylal-octalin and 1,1-dimethyl-6,6(7,7)-dihydroxymethyl-octalin.

The respective product is ethyl levulinate, i butyl levulinate and n butyl levulinate, with a productivity of 68%, 85% and 89%.
