性质:旧称盐基。通常指在水溶液中能进行电离而产生氢氧根离子OH-的化合物。如氢氧化钠、氨水、氢氧化钙、氢氧化铝等。根据碱在水溶液中产生氢氧根离子程度的大小,可分为强碱和弱碱。碱有下列通性。(1)水溶液有涩味。能使红色石蕊变为蓝色。(2)能与酸起中和反应生成盐和水。碱可由一种碱的盐类与另一种碱复分解也可由金属氧化物与水化合生成。此外,呈碱性的有机化合物,如有机含氮化合物中的胺类、生物碱等,也属于碱的范畴。至于纯碱(无水碳酸钠Na2CO3)和钾碱(碳酸钾K2CO3)等则是俗名。
