曾分布于澳洲大陆东部，数量较多。在人为干扰下，数量剧减，栖息范围缩小至约100平方公里左右。现仅见于昆士兰省的定哥地区。
在袋鼠家族中体型中等。站立时身高约500毫米，尾长400毫米。毛柔软密集，为带黑色调的灰棕色。腹毛白色。性胆小，喜单独夜间活动，故不易观察，生活习性不十分清楚。
栖息于生有草丛的密集灌木丛中，在开阔的草原生境中也偶尔可以见到。主要采食植物的根和茎。因数量稀少分布区狭窄，现被列为濒危物种而加以保护。
