以体外的装置，将患肢保持在治疗上所需的位置，如骨折、脱位复位后或某些肢体矫形术后，维持一定的位置，以利骨折及其他软组织的修复。常用的有石膏夹板、小夹板。持续牵引如骨牵引、皮肤牵引也有复位、制动及矫正畸形的作用，也属外固定的一种形式。将钢针穿刺骨端、外连支架的体外穿针固定法属另一种外固定装置，主要用于严重开放性骨折、软组织挫伤重，既无法作外固定，也难作手术内固定者。
