A remote sensing model for grass aboveground dry matter biomass monitoring was constructed from the MODIS vegetation indices in 2006—2008 and with dry matter information from field survey during the same time,to estimate the grassland biomass(both aboveground and underground) during 2006—2008 in Gannan Prefecture based on the average root-shoot ratio of seven types of grassland in several years.

In this paper,we used a simple regulated model to explore long term trends in China\'s grassland biomass and its spatial and temporal pattern,using a time series data set for the Normalized Difference Vegetation Index(NDVI) for maximum growth season(July 15th to August 15th) from 1982 to 2003,together with ground truth biomass data during 1991-1994 and 2002-2003 and historical climate data.
