有人驾驶飞行器失事时，须紧急搜寻和救助伤亡和散失的飞行人员和乘客。20世纪30年代末德国最早成立航空救援队，此后一些国家相继成立了从事搜索和救援的组织。从60年代起，搜索和救援工作已扩展到航天救援方面(见航天救生)。搜索和救援工作常使用装有无线电雷达搜索仪器、救生设备和器材的飞机、直升机、舰船和地面交通工具，并有专门的地面搜索队和伞降救援小组。80年代初期，人造卫星开始应用于搜索和救援工作（见卫星救援）。
