常年稳定湖水位与湖岸的毗邻地带称为湖岸线。反映历史上湖面某一相对稳定时期的湖岸线即为古湖岸线。湖泊是一个处于变化状态的陆域水体，在其生命过程中，有扩张时期和收缩时期，各时期延续的时间并不一样，一个湖泊的古湖岸线往往不止一条。导致湖面位置变化的主要因素有：①构造运动。湖区周围地壳上升，湖面降低，岸线下移；反之，地壳下沉，岸线上移；②气候变化。气候变湿，入湖水量大于湖水蒸发量，湖面扩大，岸线上移；反之，气候变干，岸线下移。可根据一些湖滨地貌形态，如湖滨沙堤、湖蚀平台、湖蚀穴等作为确定古湖岸线的标志，并根据沉积物样品测年数据，确定古湖岸线形成的年代，以推断湖泊的变化历史。
