SATA的全称是serialATA.
为了彻底解决硬盘外部接口的瓶颈，由七家公司联合组建的“串行ATA工作集团”制定了第一代SerialATA规范。令人感到高兴的是，2003年出现了大量直接支持SerialATA技术的南桥芯片，同时Promise、HighPoint以及Silicon的SerialATA磁盘控制芯片也令不少老主板得以使用SerialATA硬盘。
除了SerialATA控制芯片，本身采用SerialATA接口的硬盘也相继浮出水面，其中Seagate与Maxtor更是将SerialATA硬盘的成本大幅度下降，直接促成其普及。应当指出的是，目前SerialATA硬盘仍旧没能充分发挥出SerialATA接口的优势，一方面是内部传输率不足，另一方面便是大多数SerialATA依旧采用转接芯片，其内部信号依旧是并行的。
