研究辐射换热的理想化物体。黑体能够吸收向它辐射的全部能量，相同温度下的各种物体以黑体向外辐射的能量为最大。自然界的所有物体对于投射到自身的辐射能量都有不同程度地吸收、反射和透射本领。假设外界投射到物体表面上的总能量是Q,其中一部分能量Q1在进入表面后被物体吸收,另一部分能量Q2被物体反射,其余能量Q3穿透物体。于是，按能量守恒定律有式中Q1/Q、Q2/Q、Q3/Q分别称为这一物体对投入辐射的吸收率、反射率和穿透率，依次用符号α、ρ、τ来表示。因此，上式又可以表示成显然，0＜α＜1。若某一物体在任何温度下对于任何波长的辐射能量的吸收率都等于1,也即说：α＝1，ρ＝τ＝0，这一物体便被称为绝对黑体，简称黑体。物体对某一波长辐射能的吸收率被称为单色吸收率。一般说来，物体对不同波长辐射能的单色吸收率是不相同的。如果某一物体的单色吸收率与投射到该物体的辐射能的波长无关，即 ＝α＝常数，则称为灰体。灰体也是一种理想化物体。实际物体既不是绝对黑体，也不是灰体。灰体与黑体的区别在于：灰体的吸收率α＜1，而黑体的吸收率α＝1。
