（术语）梵云婆檀陀Bhadanta，原为称佛之名。在律中则为比丘之称。唐时有临坛大德之称。是敕任者。释氏要览上曰：“智度论云：梵语波檀陀，秦言大德。”毗奈耶杂事十九曰：“年少苾刍应唤老者为大德，老唤少年为具寿，若不尔者得越法罪。”僧史略下曰：“德号之具其来远矣！魏秦之世翻译律本羯磨文中族曰大德僧。（中略）诸传纪私呼僧中贤彦多曰大德，非国朝所辅也。（中略）大历六年辛亥年，四月五日，敕京城僧尼临坛大德各置十人，以为常式。有阙即填，此带临坛而有大德二字，及官补德号之始也。宪宗朝端甫为引驾大德，此带引驾为目。宣宗大中四年六月降诞日，内殿禅大德辩肇二人，此带禅学得名。”四分戒本序曰：“诸世尊大德，为我说是事。”戒疏一上曰：“七佛非一曰诸，宇宙无上曰世尊，行满位高曰大德也。”
