江苏镇江人。中共党员。1950年毕业于北京师范大学中文系。1949年参加革命工作，历任中共北京市委宣传部文艺处干事，《文艺学习》编辑部评论组编辑，《人民文学》编辑，文化部五七干校学员，人民出版社政治编辑室编辑，人民文学出版社文艺理论组组长、现代文学部副主任及党支部书记、当代文学二编室主任、编审，社党委委员，群言出版社副总编，中国小说学会理事，中国当代文学研究会常务理事、副秘书长。1945年开始发表作品。1980年加入中国作家协会。
