阿拉伯数学家、天文学家。生于波斯胡拉桑州内沙布尔，卒于同地。早年受到良好的教育，爱好诗歌，他的一些诗集流传至今。曾在内沙布尔天文台工作，和其他学者一起对当时的历法进行了一次改革。奥马·海亚姆最著名的数学著作是《代数问题的证明》，其阿拉伯文手稿和拉丁文译本已保存下来，近代被译成多种文字。此书定义代数学为"解方程的科学"，这定义一直保持到19世纪末。书中还首次给出了奥马·海亚姆所创立的一种借助圆锥曲线解三次方程的方法，这是代数与几何相结合的前驱工作。他还研究过二项式的展开、开方法则、比和比例等问题。详注过欧几里得的著作,他的《对欧几里得几何原本中困难公设的注释》一书对东方数学有过积极影响。
